Icon of the Seas delivered
Yesterday, 27 November 23, the world's largest cruise ship at present, the Icon of the Seas, was delivered. It was handed over by the Meyer Werft in Turku to Royal Caribbean International. The punctual completion and delivery demonstrate the outstanding expertise of the Meyer Group in building cruise ships.
Construction of the ship began on 18 June 2021 at the shipyard in Finland. After years of planning, the first steel cut for the Icon of the Seas took place. This cut was made to meet the requirements of Royal Caribbean International. Over time, the various steel sections were assembled. In April 2022, the keel laying was carried out in the shipyard's dry dock. By mid-December 2022, the ship was completed and undocked.
Work on the Icon of the Seas then continued at the shipyard pier in Turku. In June 2023, the ship successfully completed its first sea trial on the Baltic Sea. During this voyage, it sailed under its own power. On a second sea trial in the autumn of the same year, the Icon of the Seas met all the requirements set. The ship could now be handed over to Royal Caribbean International.

The Meyer Turku shipyard has released an impressive video. The video shows the construction process from the arrival of the first floating part to the floating of the finished cruise ship. Tim Meyer, CEO of Meyer Turku, commented on the handover of the Icon of the Seas. He emphasised that it is not only the largest but also the most advanced cruise ship in the world. With Royal Caribbean, the bar has been set exceptionally high in terms of design, technology, safety, and energy efficiency. Tim Meyer was extremely proud. He praised the entire team at Meyer Turku. All other parties involved who contributed to this groundbreaking project were also recognised.
