MSC Cruises baut den Meeresschutz um Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve weiter aus

MSC Cruises further expands marine protection at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve

MSC Cruises has announced the implementation of a new infrastructure development program for the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve in the Bahamas. The aim is to create long-term positive impacts for both the environment and local communities. The cruise company's investment will bring significant economic benefits to the Bahamas. It will create new jobs for Bahamians, both during the construction phase and in the long term.

Ocean Cay, once an industrial area for sand extraction, has been transformed by MSC Cruises into a private island with a thriving marine reserve. The company has already received several prestigious awards from tourism and environmental organisations for its efforts.

The new facilities on Ocean Cay include additional amenities for MSC Cruises passengers. New staff accommodation and operational improvements are also planned. For guests, there are excursion centres for water sports activities and island tours. There is also a diving and snorkelling centre, additional catering facilities and other amenities.

The Marine Conservation Centre

The MSC Foundation Marine Conservation Centre will be built as a base for marine biologists, coral reef experts and students. It will also house interactive pavilions, a lecture hall and coral exhibition pools. Information on the importance of the marine ecosystem will be conveyed to MSC Cruises passengers. The need to protect the world's oceans will be highlighted.

The development of Ocean Cay also includes the installation of a third solar farm. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero. The construction of an advanced wastewater treatment plant and the design of a landscaping plan are also part of the project. These measures are for sustainable environmental development with native vegetation.

The investment also allows for an increase in staff numbers from 150 to 280 through new accommodation buildings and recreational facilities.

MSC's Social Responsibility

Furthermore, MSC Cruises has reaffirmed its commitment to social responsibility and the training of seafarers. The company plans to support the LJM Maritime Academy and the University of the Bahamas. This invests in the training of Bahamians for the maritime sector.

In the 2023/2024 winter season, MSC Cruises plans to position five ships in the North American market. These include the MSC Divina, MSC Magnifica, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seascape and MSC Seashore. The company is thus providing the largest capacity in the region.
